Chapter 17

The Prince of North Pyongyang

The uniformed aide led Kitty Hawk down stone corridors so old that the passage of human feet had worn shallow channels down their centers. They turned her feet straight ahead when she went off track. Through an open door or window, unseen and far off, she heard the marching outside long before the aide spun the blast door's wheel, opened it outwards on protesting hinges, and let the sound in.

The aide walked in time with the boot-heels' marching beat as she showed Kitty Hawk outside to a walkway that ran along one of the high walls overlooking the acres of the Prince's parade grounds. Six columns of a thousand men each marched in unison below, changing direction to the hoarse barks of sergeants. Their boots struck the tightly fitted stone together and the sound of it echoed off high walls and ancient towers.

The old fortress at Yomju had stood for seven-hundred years. The Prince's compound extended beyond it, but the old fort was its heart. The rest of it was a medium-sized, impoverished and dusty military base with blast damage still evident from the last times foreign powers had attacked to destroy... what was it last time? She couldn't remember if it was weaponized nanites rumored to have been stored there or if it was superhuman soldiers the world had been convinced his predecessor had been making. Was it the New Chinese last time? No, it was the North Americans and the Japanese. From orbit.

Her aide pointed her to a low, square tower fifty yards out that looked made to inspect troops below. She heard the heavy blast door close behind her as she walked along the top of the wall. By the time she reached the tower, the already impressive columns of soldiers marching below had begun to march through each other without pause. They did it repeatedly without a single soldier colliding with another or stepping out of time. The Prince had wanted her to see something in this display, she presumed, but she couldn't understand what.

The patterns of marching men below changed once again until the columns all turned and advanced towards the center of the square. When the front ranks of each column formed a closed hexagon, six voices barked out the commands in unison, and every man turned to his left and marched. Ranks became files as new commands rang out, and they marched clockwise around the center like six hands of a clock.

Kitty Hawk heard the roar of distant jets coming closer fast. When she glanced up at the sky, she saw it shimmer in three places where camouflage moved light around three machines high up. They were small and fast-moving. Their camouflage made them genuinely hard to follow, but looking at them out the side of her eye, she kept sight of them long enough to mark their trajectory over the parade grounds. They came towards her from over the walls in what looked to be the descending arc of a high, jet-assisted jump.
